Even if they told him it was Dioxin, it most likely wouldn't have mattered. Guess he should have asked what the stuff was. So, he was paid for spreading dioxin from NEPACO chemical plant. Because they were all no more educated to the dangers than he, or anyone else was at the time. All the while he was doing this, the people were all waving, smiling, and happy to see both him and his truck. ![]() There were plenty of people all up and down the line who knew, or at least should have known this was a disaster waiting to happen. You'll be arrested, fined, and a hazmat team in white suits will show up at your house, with trucks to dig out the contaminated soil, and haul it to a toxic waste storage facility. Try dumping 5 quarts of your used motor oil on your dirt driveway today, and see what happens. There were no laws or permits regarding that process, like there are today. No one checked, looked, or cared, as to what he was spreading, or if it was dangerous. ![]() Which the people were all happy to see him do. Which at the time was a very common practice there, and in other parts of rural America. ![]() He was contracted to spread waste oil on the dirt roads there. ![]() And never came across as the type of individual who would have knowingly done that, had he known of the harm it would cause. Sad what happened to town and I say the Russell Martin Bliss should have been prosecuted.
